In January, I had a creative meeting with KOTMO at their office along with many other designers and we discussed future projects and deadlines. That’s when I met Joel Desmarais, the lead designer of Machine Design Appliqué and his assistant designer Marie-Andrée Groleau. As we were walking back to our respective ateliers (they’re literally two and a half minutes away from each other), we started talking about designing a new collection together. Machine creates furniture and objects for everyday life spaces and Matu thrives on anything that involves vegetable tanned leather. It was a match made in heaven.
A few weeks later, we sat down and started sketching out ideas. We talked about the transat chair that Machine had already designed and decided to go from there. It then came to me that we should create a collection that includes the transat chair and two new pieces. I had this perfect Pinterest board that helped me find inspiration throughout the design process. That’s when the idea of the magazine rack and the ottoman was born. And finally, the Holstein collection was introduced.
We designed this collection with two materials we specialize in: steel and vegetable tanned leather. The entire Holstein range is offered in black.
Like I said, both design companies work perfectly together. Matu x Machine is the union of two creative worlds and mindsets linked by the passion and attention to detail throughout the design of everyday utilitarian products. We had to work fast and efficiently in order to unveil the collection in a short month.
Now that the collection is ready (and photographed), we would like to officially invite you to our launch on May 5th! It will take place at Rose Architecture’s studio, located at 5425 de Bordeaux Street, studio 243. There will be wine, beer and pretzels (pretzels are a must!).
You will be able to shop and pre-order the new Holstein collection starting May 5th by clicking here.
Last week, we were in Phil Bernard’s studio to photograph the collection and had a blast! He is our go-to photographer and shares our sense of style and design – we are a perfect fit.
Here are a few pictures of the day spent with Phil. Enjoy!
